"Bedrooms are a place of rest and relaxation...create your space"

Best Bedroom decorating ideas for any type of bedroom in your home. Decorating a Master Bedroom, Guest Bedroom, Bedroom Makeover, and of course a Romantic Bedroom!

Bedrooms are very personal spaces for most of us, so we want them to reflect that special feeling, particularly bedrooms that we use ourselves.

Here are some fundamental thoughts, tips and bedroom decorating ideas for you!

1. Start with the floor and walls.

Most people want something soft under their feet in the bedroom, so even if the majority of your home is tile, wood or laminate, consider carpet for the bedroom areas.

Or at a minimum use a generous array of scatter/area rugs where the traffic patterns are, particularly where your feet touch the floor getting in and out of bed.

Soft colors for the floors and walls are usually a good choice. Most of us want our bedrooms to be soothing, inviting places to relax and unwind, and color choices have a great influence on that, so be sure to have this decision at the top of the bedroom decorating ideas list.

Bedroom decorating and design ideas Take the overall style of your home into consideration, as well as the palette used throughout the rest of your home, when selecting bedroom colors.

For the walls, soft shades of green, blue, rose, peach and yellow can work very well. Muted shades of light brown, taupe and gray can work, too, as long as they don’t become too dark and oppressive.

Generally speaking, the bedroom is not the space to use elaborate combinations of colors on the walls. Stick with one, or a major color with a carefully placed accent shade.

2. Function reigns with furnishings

The first selections that should go on the bedroom decorating ideas list are the necessary pieces in the room - bed (of course), dresser, nightstand.

Keep these three tips in mind when selecting and placing the functional pieces:

  • Size of Room I know it seems really obvious, but I have seen many bedrooms that have a queen size bed, for example, crammed into a twin size bed space. Make you that you leave enough room, at least a couple of feet, on either side of the bed so that people can actually get in and out of it without difficulty.

At the other end of the spectrum are king sized bedrooms that are sparsely furnished and look a little forlorn. We’ll talk more about that in a minute.

  • Size of individual furnishings Make sure you account for the size of all of the pieces when selecting and placing them in your bedroom.

Great bedroom design ideas For example...that queen size sleigh bed is awesome and you have to have it. Cool. Just be aware of how much space, literally and visually, it will take up, and strive to balance it out with the other furnishings in the room.

Not sure of sizes? Here are the standards:

    • California king bed: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long
    • King bed: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
    • Queen bed: 60 inches wide x 80 inches long
    • Full bed (or double bed): 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
    • Twin bed: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long

Here's a bedroom decorating idea that worked for me:

I had a sleigh bed in a large bedroom and placed it at an angle to showcase the bed - it was really lovely. There was a large walk in closet for storage purposes so I didn’t need a traditional dresser or chest of drawers. I also wanted to use a portion of the space for relaxation with a TV and side chairs.

So, I used just a nightstand and left the rest of the area in this spacious room for the TV area. It worked very well and there was no crowding, plus, the bed was the focal point in the room.

  • Placement of furnishings Consider how the main pieces of furniture will work both functionally and aesthetically in the bedroom decor and design plan.

Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas Just a note about the bedroom furniture itself. Most decorating styles can look great with pieces that have common elements but don't come from a matched set.

For example, you may find an iron bed that you love, use a painted oval end table as a nightstand, and bring in an armoire that has iron accents similar to the bed. So don’t worry about being too matchy matchy unless you are a staunch traditional decorating style lover.

Does the bed have a headboard? Foot board? How many additional pieces will go in the bedroom? And while we’re talking about other pieces, the bedroom is no different than any other space in your home.

Try not to stuff as many pieces as possible into the space. Not only will it look cluttered, it might not help you relax and unwind...too much going on around you, and you’ll probably bump into things that don’t need to be in there!

Bottom Line with bedroom decorating ideas? Put what you need in the bedroom and use a light hand with additional furnishings. Remember tips 1 and 2 and you’ll be okay!

Bedroom Design Ideas 3. Accessories create the personality and set the tone!

Remember the color palette for the bedroom and finish the space according to your interior decorating style.

A few carefully selected accessories will go much further than a bunch of stuff scattered around, and will be appreciated more as well.

Some of your choices will depend on the decorating style, as shabby chic decorating and accessories will differ from contemporary home decor. One style stresses collections and displays, while the other is a more refined, minimal type look.

Now your bedroom decorating ideas project is starting to take shape! You know what you want to accomplish, determined the budget, narrowed down the decor style and colors, so you've taken care of the basics.

It's time for some bedroom decorating tips and specifics that will help you create the bedroom that reflects you and your personality. Read on for more!

BEDROOM DECORATING IDEA!

Here is a well priced, versatile bedspread that I purchased recently and wanted to pass on to my readers.

This is a Matelesse Bedspread - lightweight, easy care, fits just about any budget and comes in several sizes and colors...white, ivory, sage and blue. I paid less than $35 for a Queen size spread and about $15 each for the pillow shams.

The total cost was less than $75 and the set looks great in my guest bedroom!
