Contemporary Kitchen Design Ideas

"Contemporary kitchen design ideas that can work for your home"

Contemporary kitchen design ideas for your home.

Find out what types of materials and design concepts are used in the modern style kitchen. Easy to read, simple to follow!

Clean, simple, uncluttered design with attention to detail...keep those terms in the forefront of your project planning.

Kitchens that possess a modern, contemporary feel have some elements in common.

Contemporary Kitchen Design Overall, when you walk into a contemporary kitchen, you notice that it has a limited number of textural elements, and those elements are not shadowed under any clutter or ‘stuff’ (that’s my professional term for the misc items that fill our counters, walls and table tops).

There is also limited amount of decorative trim and ornamentation, if any, used in the space.

What elements are most often present?

Man-made materials such as stainless steel, laminate, frosted glass, chrome, concrete and linoleum. That said, however, natural materials are also quite comfortable in the contemporary kitchen, including granite, wood, slate and stone.

These elements are often used as follows:

Frameless cabinets with large, simple hardware

Basic slab Door styles

Frosted door inserts or glass panels

Geometric angles and lines

Laminate surfaces in clean white or bold colors

Lighting that is abundant and adjustable, such as track lighting

Metal components including stainless steel, copper, or chrome

Sweeping curves in cabinetry or counter tops

Woods with a delicate grain like maple, birch, or ash

Modern Kitchen Designs & Ideas The key idea to modern kitchen design is how these elements are used in the space. Here are some examples:

  • Maple cabinetry with curvy door pulls, granite counter tops, and a ceramic tile backsplash combine the hues of nature and bring warmth to a contemporary look.
  • White walls, dark oak cabinets, maple flooring and light granite counter tops create sophisticated contrasts
  • Use a mix of glass-front and open upper cabinets, with stainless-steel appliances, fixtures, and hardware along with recessed lighting to complete your contemporary kitchen design.
  • Looking for a few curves in your modern kitchen? Consider a gently curved island, barstools with curved backs and lighting that follows to create a soft sophistication
  • Present some drama with red-toned walls to offset clean-lined maple cabinetry, black granite counters and stainless steel appliances.

Remember the key components of contemporary kitchen design...Clean, simple, uncluttered design with attention to detail...keep those terms in the forefront of your project planning...and you will create a beautiful, contemporary space.
