Create a Cozy Cottage Style Kitchen
"A cottage style kitchen is the heart of the home"

What can speak more clearly about the simple, open, welcoming design of cottage style decor than a charming cottage style kitchen. After all, the basis of cottage style decor is about simplicity, charm, understated design and a sense of natural elements. Here are some great ideas for your cottage style decor. Select those that will work for you, your budget and the space you have to work with. First, cottage style can encompass the very simple and cost effective design, to higher end materials that are presented in an uncomplicated and uncluttered way. Your budget and taste will impact the selection of materials such as flooring, cabinetry and countertops, but the cottage style kitchen you create will maintain the overall simplicity and charm of the style. Let's start with the floors. Wood floors are your choice, whether they are natural pine that is well worn and distressed, pre-finished wood, laminate or some other type of wood product. The overall look to the floor should be medium to light - nothing overly dark and oppressive for your cottage style decor!
The overall Color palette should remain with off whites, creams, lighter shades of green, blue, pink, etc. Darker tones of these colors as accents are great, just refrain from getting too dark on the walls and countertops. Other than that caution, you can use any light shade that you desire. Your overall color scheme should be consistent throughout your cottage style home, so that will influence your decision in the kitchen. Cabinetry is always a statement in cottage style kitchens. Light, possibly painted, with some open shelving in the upper cabinets to display china and other antiques, collectables or every day dishes. Simple cabinet pulls are a good choice with this style decor, also. Natural light is always desirable, so keep the window treatments very low key, using soft cottons, lace or other organic fabrics. Refrain from any heavy material or dark colors at the windows. Countertops should look natural and keep to the lighter tones. Think of a literal country cottage when making this selection, and remember simple, gracious, welcoming, charming....this is not a drama statement. Leave that for another decor style!
Appliances should give the appearance of simplicity or have an 'antique' quality to them. The same goes for the sink and fixtures selected. This doesn't mean cheap or literally old, worn items. It is the selection of materials that will enhance the overall cottage style decor that is the key to success with this project. To pull everything together in your cottage decorating for the kitchen, use wide moldings, beaded board (this is such a cool product and is appropriate anywhere it makes sense in the space), exposed feet on lower cabinets and/or accent pieces used in the kitchen, simple crown molding to top the cabinets, etc. Finally, remember that your cottage style kitchen should have some interesting accent pieces and personal touches, but don't let the space become cluttered and overworked. Err to the conservative and use a light touch with the accessories. Do you love the cottage style decor you've created in your home? Share your thoughts with our readers. It's simple!
