"Vintage Rustic meets Urban Sophistication"

Country Chic Style

Country Chic...what does it mean in terms of home decor? Think of it this way. Take rustic charm, blend it with simple elegance and throw in a measure of urban sophistication.

How does this design style differ from classic country style? You won't see gingham prints, oak furniture, ruffled valances, vast displays of collections and stuffed geese wearing their Sunday best in a Country Chic home.

See how Better Homes and Garden's contributing editor Stephen Saint-Onge transforms a dated and dark dinette into the cozy Country Chic breakfast nook pictured above.

What you WILL find is a comfortable combination of the following:

  • Antique pieces that are sturdy and functional
  • Comfy and casual upholstery that is right at home with contemporary pieces such as an accent chair or floor lamp
  • A combination of light and dark wood finishes that may include a distressed piece or two. And, wicker always has a place in Country Chic decor.
  • Country Chic Decorating
  • Fabrics provide color and are generally soft and muted in shades of blue, green, rose and yellow. Bring in the surprise, though, with a brightly colored accent such as apple red or bright orange.
  • Elements of stainless steel and iron are present, such as a table, chair or lamp base, kitchen appliances, bar stools, and more.
  • Uniquely shaped accent pieces provide sophistication and an element of surprise. These could be flea market retro treasures, reproductions or simply a quirky element that you love, to complete the space.
  • Curves and softness are present in the accent pieces, with elegant candlesticks, cushy area rugs and antique picture frames to name just a few.
  • Window treatments are simple and functional, with a rolled roman shade or a simple cotton panel that softens the space but lets the light flow into the room.

The use of natural light combined with layers of fabrics and textures creates a casual and comfortable ambiance in your home.

Country Chic Furniture

You decide which of these elements to emphasize in your home.

For some, a subtle hint of stainless and urban sophistication is all that is desired, with emphasis on the casual country comfort tempered with a light touch of stylish elegance.

Other interpretations might focus on creating an eclectic and interesting space with a hint of rustic, good measure of urban sophistication and pop of brightly colored accents.

Country Chic Lighting

Select pieces and accents that speak to you and your lifestyle. If you enjoy a quality bottle of wine, how cool would this 'wine bottle' chandelier be?

That's the beauty of Country Chic decorating...it is a very personal interpretation of a style that will be expressed uniquely in each home.
