Country Wall Decor Ideas

Classic country style wall decor, including Americana style, embodies the heart of country decorating, an enduring style loved by many. Friendly, informal and easy on the budget, classic country wall designs use natural elements that can be found right outside your front door.

Wood is a staple of country decor, and wall designs are no exception. Hand painted signs welcoming guests, barn stars in differing sizes and barnwood picture frames are just a few of the wall decor choices in classic country homes.

Larger wall spaces can handle a beautiful hand made quilt or other such type of wall hanging.

Wall baskets fashioned from natural material such as wicker, with branches, twigs, berries and the like flowing from them look great, large or small.

Artwork always has a presence in your country style home, with outdoor scenes, animals and flowers among the choices.

Natural wreaths made from elements as simple as grapevine, with sweet dried flowers or red berries always have a place in country wall decor. If you decide to use silk or faux materials, that is fine...just make sure it has a realistic appearance, and, go easy on the greenery. Stay with natural colors, textures and flowers.

What do you have a passion for and collect? Maybe it is vintage hats, for example (as shown in the picture above). Use several in you wall decor to tie in with the other hats on display in your home.

Cabinets and shelving are always at home in country wall decor designs.

Remember that country style decorating allows for a 'controlled clutter' with collections, displays and wall decor, so it's okay to go a little overboard with the overall look of your country home.

Just keep these tips in mind that as you create your wall designs:

  • Stay true to your color palette when selecting your wall decor. It's great to use a new accent color in small amounts, but include your main colors as well for continuity.
  • If using the same element, such as barn stars, vary the sizes and colors
  • Create an interesting collage of three different elements, such as a wall basket, small wreath and a painted sign, for example. Lay your pieces on the floor or table and try them in various positions until you find the arrangement that is most pleasing.
  • Vary the height, width and texture of each piece to keep the overall look interesting and visually pleasing
  • A striking piece of artwork should have a place of its own in your country wall decor scheme. Let it shine on its own without any accompanying pieces.
  • Search flea markets, antique shops, garage sales and the like for unique and unusual pieces for your wall designs, such as old shutters, mirrors, barn tools and the like. My philosophy is, if you can hang it on a nail, it qualifies as wall decor!

Americana decor uses the same principles but maintains a color palette of varying shades of reds, whites and blues.

Is your particular country style interpretation more rustic, cottage, western, or chic? Use these principles and apply them to your country style.

For example, rustic country wall decor is very simple, with straight lines and uncomplicated designs. And, the overall look is not cluttered, but rather functional and useful.

Country Cottage will bring in lighter colors, a bit of ruffles and lace, and overall a softer look in the design scheme.

If western country is your preference, you already know what to do! Just stay true to your overall scheme and it will be a great look.

Country chic...what's that? Find out more about Country Chic style decor and learn if this speaks to you and your lifestyle. (Hint: it's a blend of rustic charm, simple elegance and urban sophistication!)
