Country Window Treatments

"Create your sense of country style with these
simple window treatment ideas"

True to the style of country home decorating, your window treatments may be fashioned from something that originally served a different purpose.

Here are a few examples of country window treatments that are fun, easy and will complete the country decor look in your home:

Use vintage tea towels, doilies or handkerchiefs and layer them to create a dainty valance.

Country window treatments Take a cotton curtain or lace panel and hang it sideways over a rod to create a simple valance. (Hint: you don't always have to push your curtain rod through the curtain; just drape the curtain over the rod).

Add some lace or crochet edging to a simple window shade, then add a valance of the same material used for the edging (or as similar as you can find), to soften the overall look of the window treatment.

Swag or drape a garland of lace, greenery or a combination of both as a simple window treatment. If you have blinds at the window for privacy, that's ok - it will look good that way, too.

In this country cottage style bedroom pictured to the right, I took a cafe curtain and used it as a valance because I wanted a little different look than the typical valance. Because it is lace, the fabric doesn't overpower the window.

Country window treatment ideas If your country style home is more of a vintage or primitive look, use sturdy tree branches (or faux branches if you prefer) that are relatively straight as rods (this look works best on small windows). Then attach a variety of dried flowers for color. You could hang a lace curtain on a simple rod behind the branch, or hang a valance/curtain with tab or loopy tops directly from the branch.

For a more traditional country window treatment, shutters are always a good choice.

Plantation shutters, half shutters across the lower portion of the window, antique shutters hung on either side of the window (a faux shutter, if you will) are all complementary to your country decor.

Tab top curtains of any length are a good choice for country home decorating, as are ruffled tie back curtains.

Simple lace or cotton curtainstied back, hung at each side of the window, or simply over the window to gracefully flow with the breeze, will never go out of style in your country home.

Keep the country window treatments simple, natural and carefree, and you will be pleased with the results.
