You may or may not keep a close eye on interior design trends, but it's interesting to note the direction of design as it relates to our society.

Our homes and interior designs are a reflection of who we are, so it's not surprising that decorating trends reflect the changing economy and adjusted outlook of many people after the significant events of the last several years.

Here are some highlights in current and upcoming home interior design:

Natural Lighting takes a more significant role in our everyday lives and how we design our homes. Letting the sunshine in can help to lower electricity costs, brighten up the interior of our homes and help us to feel more positive.

Bringing the past into the present with distressed finishes and heirloom colors. Smoky blues, earthy browns and aged greens are finding their way into our color palettes.

Recycling and repurposing furniture is a cost saver as well as a way to contribute to green living in home decorating. Don't discard or throw away a used piece of furniture if it has good 'bones'.

Distress, repaint, revive with new accessories, reupholster or slipcover are just a few of the ways to give new life to used case goods and upholstered pieces. Introduce an antique piece into your home's decor - most decorating styles will accommodate a 'blast from the past' quite well.

Neutral colors are emerging in tones of gray and white as we look to simplify our interior designs as well as our lives. Pair with warm golds, tranquil turquoise or deep taupe to enliven the color palette.

Flat woven rugs in natural fabrics are today's choice in floor coverings.

Overall you can see the trends...simplify, repurpose, use natural materials and let the sun shine in our homes.
