At its simplest, when you are decorating with color, you are using a palette of several selected colors in varying shades and intensities.

The overall look and feel of the space will reflect the warmth, interest and drama that interplay of color naturally creates.

What about decorating with white? Technically, white isn't a 'color'. It is the absence of a unique spectral reflection. But, use it as a method of decorating and design in a room and you feel the 'presence' of the light.

Options are many with white as a backdrop. There are two keys to using white as the backdrop and/or focus of decorating a room.

First, use texture to create interest and variety in a space that is predominantly decorated with shades of white. Fabric, carpet/rugs, lampshades, pillows, artwork, case goods and picture frames are all opportunities to introduce texture.

Second, always be aware that there are many, many shades of white, and most have underlying colors that reflect in the room. Some will have undertones of yellow, some blue, some gray. There are subtle differences that become more significant when painted on the walls of your room.
