Great Kitchen Remodel Ideas
"Follow these common sense guidelines to make your kitchen remodeling project a success" So you're contemplating a kitchen remodel? You probably already know that a remodel in the truest sense is quite an undertaking! The planning, decisions, costs and time involved can be daunting.
If a 'kitchen facelift' is more realistic for you, the project will be somewhat less time consuming and certainly less costly. Here are some suggestions and ideas for your kitchen design project, and many will apply to the simpler 'facelift' projects as well:
1. PLEASE determine a realistic budget before you do anything. If you do your homework and research this type of project, you know that a major kitchen remodel will run up to 20% over the initial budgeted amount. Why? Things happen during the process, you may very well change your mind about some aspect of the kitchen remodel and the cost will rise, and, remodels to existing homes have the 'surprise' factor for the contractor. Things they can't see when project costs are estimated, but are revealed once the actual work begins. Have some extra funds set aside just in case... 2. Create a list of the most important changes, updates and features of the kitchen remodel. Rate your list by item with the 'Must Haves', 'Would like to have' and 'I'm probably dreaming, but..' If there is more than one person (like a spouse) with an opinion, make two lists and merge them! You can be working on this list as you are completing the next step.
3. Go to kitchen design retail stores, read magazines, study online material and any other type of education you can acquire regarding kitchen design and remodeling. There is a vast amount of information, choices, styles that span the budget from very modest to 'no limit'. Keep in mind that it is one thing to look at pictures and examples, and another to visualize it in YOUR kitchen space. You might want to try a simple kitchen software program. 4. The major areas of decision making in a kitchen remodel are flooring, cabinetry, lighting, appliances and counter tops. Before you literally make these decisions, have a color palette in mind to ensure that your selections will be cohesive. If you need some help determining a color palette, here is some helpful information regarding Decorating Color Schemes Interested in some of the latest in color trends? Read about Color Trends Here are a few color related suggestions. If your kitchen space is small and you want to create a more spacious feeling, stay with the neutral color family. That doesn't have to mean boring, either. There are hundreds of beautiful neutrals to choose from just in the cream/tan/light brown palette. Cool colors such as beautiful, soft shades of blue, green and gray are also good choices. If your kitchen has the space, you can use color to create drama. Walls and counter tops are the two areas that offer more flexibility with bolder colors.
5. Be aware that cabinetry can take a huge chunk of your budget, so be prepared! All of the bells and whistles that are beautiful, functional or both, can add thousands to the cost of the cabinets. So make sure that you know what your decision and modifications to the cabinet design will ultimately cost. 6. Think about lighting in the kitchen remodel several ways. There is task lighting, overall lighting and ambient lighting. It helps to include all three elements in your lighting plan. This becomes particularly significant if your space does not have much natural light. 7. An island will add function, storage and seating capabilities, and would be a wise consideration for just about any kitchen design. The size of the island is determined by the size of your kitchen space. Think about it! You may be really glad you did. A new and interesting trend in kitchen design is to make use of softer curves rather than all hard lines in the design of the space. The photo at the top of this page is a great example of an island that has a graceful, and functional curve in the design. 8. Appliances are another area where you can spend a chunk of the budget. This is an area where 'like to have' and 'need to have' should probably have a little talk! If your budget allows for the best, go for it and select the high end appliances, such as refrigerator, range/oven, washer/dryer and dishwasher that you really want. There are some great choices in mid-priced appliances, too. It's a matter of deciding how you want to allocate your budget.
9. If you can afford to install higher end countertops such as granite or corian, the better quality products are absolutely stunning. Be sure to learn the pros and cons of each type of product before you decide. If your budget requires a less costly product, there are many beautiful laminates, solid surface product and edge finishing options that make a great statement in your kitchen. So there you are...some practical and simple suggestions for a successful kitchen remodel!
