"Live like you are enjoying the simple, beautiful Tuscan life"

Tuscan Furniture Style

What is Tuscan furniture? Well, for some it is an almost Mediterranean style with heavy, ornate wood pieces and dark tapestries hanging from the walls.

Today's simple, authentic Tuscan furniture and room design exemplify the rustic country life of rural Italy, with warm, natural colors and a welcoming elegance to complete the decor.

What do you look for?

Fine hardwood to common rustic woods...cypress, fir, chestnut and poplar...furniture has simple, classic lines with accents of iron, marble, copper and leather.

Many pieces in Tuscan home decor will have an aged, distressed look, whether from true age or a reproduction. Do you have a family heirloom that you love? Preferably it will be more simple and rustic than ornate and 'gilded'. Distressed, well-worn, iron pulls, strong lines...these are the elements that would live well with your Tuscan style.

Tiles are often used as table tops, and include the beautiful colors of Tuscany. Read more about Tuscan colors and paint colors.

Iron based tables with straight or gently curved legs, topped with wood, tile or marble.

Upholstered pieces should be graceful yet simple overall, with a minimum of wood detailing.

Fabrics are often plain, light colors with nubby, textured fabrics. Or, you will see Tuscan furniture that includes a beautiful floral fabric, as the photo at the top of the page shows (both photos shown were taken at a home in Tuscany).

Tuscan Living Room Furniture If you are going to select furniture for your Tuscan style decor, use this helpful list of the elements of a Tuscan style room to pull your design together:

Stone - on the floors or walls, with naturally rougher edges

Textured finishes such as stucco on walls and ceilings. Consider faux finishes, color washing or other forms of texturizing some of the walls of your home.

Wood - beams, floors, furniture, and more. Wood product is a staple of Tuscan homes. Keep the furniture simple and for the most part unpainted, utilizing the natural finish of the element. Doors and trim should look like natural wood - don't paint it white or any other color.

Tile - usually terra cotta, although other tile can be used effectively as well, on floors, table tops and more.

Vibrant Color - as mentioned above, warm colors abound. Use them on walls, as accents throughout the home and definitely in the flowers that are found both inside and outside.

Iron - in accessories, furniture bases, simple (not ornate) chandeliers

Upholstery in light colors, usually plain fabrics, with a floral here and there for color and a softer counterpoint to the other elements.

Water - an element that is almost always present in authentic Tuscan decor. Most times it is on the exterior in a fountain placed in a courtyard...use your imagination for your home and look for creative methods to bring this natural element into your Tuscan home.

Windows - keep them simple, with cotton or other organic fabrics in white or neutral shades. If privacy is a necessity, use simple wood blinds or roman shades with a finish that will blend in with the wood trim around the window.

Whether brand new, reproduction or vintage antique, use Tuscan furniture pieces that you love... avoid the dreaded 'flea market clutter' that can result from too much in the space...use as much or as little color as suits your lifestyle...remember the beautiful flowers and your Tuscan design will come to life!
