"Transform your space with the right wall decorations"

Wall decorating ideas and tips for your home that are helpful no matter what your decorating style or budget may be.

Tired of staring at those blank white walls? Read on now!

Answering the question, “How do I decorate my walls” sends some people into a panic.

After selecting the furnishings and accessories for a room or space, wall decorations can complete the look in a spectacular way or relegate the space to ho-hum ordinary and predictable.

Wall Decorating Ideas and Tips

No need to stress out over wall decor...just follow this process and the ideas presented here...you’ll be fine!

There are three main considerations for determining the right wall decor for your home:

The first step is to make sure that your walls themselves are in order, meaning, do they need some color? decorative trim such as crown molding? practical trim such as shoe molding? a really good cleaning? Take a good long look and make sure your walls are ready for those decorations.

Need help with color for the room or walls? Read more about selecting the right paint colors here.

Next, have a good sense of your decorating style for this space, as that will influence your wall decorating ideas and selections.

For example, if contemporary home decor speaks to you, then you will definitely utilize the ‘less is more’ strategy for your wall decor. You might select one dramatic piece of art (doesn’t have to be an expensive original to be great) for the focal point wall in the room.

Does country cottage style more aptly define your lifestyle and preferences? Your wall decor might include collections of pretty plates, floral prints and whitewashed wall vases with flowing greenery.

The point is, make sure that your wall decor is consistent with the rest of your room and home.

The third important consideration with wall decorating ideas is the room function itself. This may seem obvious, but sometimes we get caught up in how much we adore a particular picture, for example, and forget about the space it is going into.

If your wall decorating ideas are for the kitchen, for example, make sure they are appropriate for the space. Having said that, I am all for being creative and utilizing artwork and wall accessories in ways that are unexpected, so I am not advocating the typical picture collections of fruits or spices, for example.

Just make sure that your selection is compatible with the room function, fits the color palette for the space as well as the decorating style you have chosen.

Wall Decorating Ideas Next, tips for placement of your wall decorations:

1. Please, please don’t ‘hang ’em high’! You and your guests should not have to look toward the ceiling to see the awesome artwork in the living room.

Place your artwork, collectibles, photos, etc. just a shade above eye level for the average height adult.

2. Now, there are situations where you can take your artwork and hang it lower than stated in tip #1 and you can create a number of different and unique looks.

For example, if you have a nightstand in the bedroom with a lamp on it, hang your picture so that the bottom of the artwork is about 3 to 4 inches below the top of, and to the side of, the lamp. By doing this you are creating a visual tie between the artwork, the lamp and the table. It’s a cozy look.

A collection of four prints, for example, can create a border above in a multi-surface area. I used this technique in the master bath garden tub area, hanging my four small prints just above the line of tile on the wall. This technique can be used in any number of ways and it creates an interesting and unexpected look. Try this as a ‘headboard’ in your guest bedroom!

3. Have you ever been to a home where there was so much adornment on the walls it made you dizzy to look at them? You don’t have to, and should not, place something on every inch of open wall space in your home. The result is a cluttered and unappealing mess, actually.

If you are searching for fresh wall decorating ideas for your home, take a moment and do this: look around the room you are in right now (we’ll assume you’re at home!) and if there are more than two pieces of wall decor on any one wall (unless it is a collection), it’s probably too many.

The more ‘stuff’ you have on the walls, the harder it is for your eye to visually take in each piece. Start with one item and be very selective about adding anything to it, until you’re sure it is needed.

4. Do you like collections? Use your imagination! If you have a large wall space that needs help, try using varying shapes and sizes of:

  • mirrors
  • vintage picture frames (just the frames - work well on a wall with color)
  • wall tiles
  • wrought iron accents, or
  • frame recipes, favorite songs or hymns, children’s artwork, vintage hankies

Removable wall stickers - decorating ideas

More wall decorating ideas!

Murals are available in just about any size, style, theme and price. Whether you want to cover an entire wall or a small area, a (mural)l might be just the wall decorating idea you need!

Wall stickers are an easy and fun method for creating interesting conversation starters. Themes, children’s art, words and phrases...the list is long and the choices are many! Best of all, they are removable when you want to change the look.

Faux finishes can be a budget friendly and often simple way to create drama and contrast in a space. For do-it-yourselfers, always make a practice board first, but when you are happy with the result, you can dramatically change the look of a room by faux finishing a wall or the entire room.

Prefer to hire it out? If you have the budget, the sky’s the limit when it comes to creating faux finishes.

Have fun choosing the wall decorating ideas that will work best for your and lifestyle!
