I have just finished my Christmas decorating. Yes, I like to get my home decorated for the holidays right after Thanksgiving, so we can enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of this time of year. No snow in southwest Florida, so I still see palm trees swaying outside. But inside it's festive! My holiday decorations have remained essentially the same for several years, so I use what I already own and try to change things up each year. This year I selected a beautiful holiday flower to use as a theme throughout my decorating...I placed these flowers in different areas as accents to my holiday decor. The Christmas tree you see is relatively small and slim...nothing fancy here...but I created an evergreen 'rim' around the tree skirt and added one of my holiday flowers to enhance the look and begin my Christmas decorating theme. I live near Fort Myers Beach and so the majority of my design clients live in the Fort Myers and Beach areas of southwest Florida. My clients, Amy and Brad, live in the Chicago area and own a condo on the north end of Fort Myers Beach that they use as a rental as well as for their own family. The condo community is in a very desirable area of the island, so my clients wanted the interior of the home to reflect that. Looking for ways to cozy up the look of your kitchen? Here are three things you can do:

1) Use upholstered chairs and stools instead of all wood pieces. The fabric gives an overall softer look. Don’t limit yourself to the typical kitchen chairs, either. Any upholstered chair of the right height for your table could work very well.

2) Add lighting - lamps, wall sconces, under counter, etc. The variety of lights will create ambiance as well as provide function.

3) Use artwork and accessories, just like you would in a living area. Don’t limit yourself to the typical kitchen type prints and wall art. Pull something in from another room that you love. Use books and collectables to accent open shelves and soffits, again utilizing pieces that aren’t usually expected in the kitchen area.

The result? No matter what your decorating style is, your kitchen and nook area will be warm, inviting and fit right in with the rest of your home.
